The athlete behind the coach

Experience you can't learn from a textbook.

Ashley discovered table tennis at school in East London, and his coaches noticed early. By 2009 he'd joined the GB Para Table Tennis Performance Squad, swapping casual games for a structured programme built around technique, fitness and match play.

Full-time training meant relocating to Sheffield, training daily alongside the rest of the GB squad and testing his game against some of the best players in the sport. That's where the instinctive parts of his game became deliberate, and where losing regularly against strong opposition taught him more than winning ever did.

Two Paralympic Games followed: Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. Around them came a World Championship quarter-final and European team medals in 2017 and 2019, plus a full international tour schedule across China, Japan, Slovenia and Slovakia.

He coaches from that experience directly, backed by a degree in sports coaching and analysis from London South Bank University. Every correction comes with the reasoning behind it, so you can apply it in a match when he isn't standing at the other end of the table.
